Built in the 12th century under the dedication of Saint-Pierre, the parish church of Coaraze was rebuilt once in the 14th century and was then dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. A succession of earthquakes necessitated its partial rebuilding on several occasions, the last completed in 1717. In the third quarter of the 18th century, a major campaign of decoration transformed this rustic mountain building of rectangular plan into a fine Rococo church inspired by the decorations of late Baroque in Nice: a set of altars with gypsum retables took place in the choir and the lateral chapels bordering the nave, close in their composition and execution to contemporary achievements in some of the churches of the perched villages of the Nice hinterland. Built at the end of a spur and on the side of a cliff, the church was the subject of several restoration campaigns in the 19th and 20th centuries in particular to resolve stability problems; in 1863, these works were accompanied by the execution of a neo-Baroque painted decoration on the upper sections and the vault of the nave.

The church consists of a building of irregular rectangular plan, with bell tower within the building in the form of a square tower on the south-west corner. Attached to the south are the former sacristy, the square-plan room open to the choir and the present sacristy built in the passage which originally separated the church from the Penitents' chapel.
