Bichancourt is a commune situated in the Chaunois, an area devastated during the First World War and in particular in 1917. It is part of the thousand communes that were struck by destruction. The new church is reconstructed exactly on the site of the original church, relatively late in the day, as it was only inaugurated in 1931. The commune adheres to the reconstruction cooperative of churches of the diocese of Soissons, which manages war damage. It calls upon the architect Charles Luciani. The interior decoration is entrusted to Louis Mazetier, painter and cartoon designer for stained glass. In the Second World War, the church was little damaged. The stained glass windows visible today are the work of Léon called Claude Blanchet, carried out between 1956-1957.

The church of Bichancourt is a neo-Romanesque building constructed principally in stone, in ashlar. Its plan is basic: a nave composed of three bays and flanked by two aisles, a transept and an apse with three panels, adjoined by a sacristy to the north and a catechism room to the south. The western mass is occupied by the bell tower which comprises in its upper part 4 small turrets. The whole is covered with slate. On the façade, above the portal with arcades decorated with floral motifs, foliage and interlacing, a bas-relief in medallion represents the Charity of Saint-Martin (sculptured by Louis Fornerot and René Grégoire). The interior decoration is remarkable. It develops over 32 metres in length, 14 metres in width and 12.5 metres in height. The church is entirely covered with frescos by Louis Mazetier. The apse is covered with a vault of three panels entirely covered with stylized decorative dentilled motifs with at the summit a cross surmounted by a crown. Between the three high windows, knights or angels are represented. Christological symbols are also depicted beneath each window, such as the dolphin, the paschal lamb or the pelican feeding its young. The right bay of the choir, to the north, displays a scene from the New Testament: the Virgin is represented with Joseph, they are kneeling at the foot of the Infant Jesus who has his arm in the form of a cross, himself surmounted by the dove of the Holy Spirit. The group is flanked by two angels. In the lower register, Adam and Eve are represented before the tree of life around which the serpent winds itself. In echo to this scene, on the south side, are represented a sacrifice of Christ and the pilgrims of Emmaus. In the transept, the walls are likewise historiated. To the north, Isaiah is associated with the scene of the Assumption, above the door giving access to the sacristy. The north arm of the transept is occupied by the chapel dedicated to the Virgin. The north wall of the arm of the transept is covered with symmetrical decorative motifs, with very stylized flower vases. The whole is flanked at the extremities by two figures of angels. The south arm of the transept, on its eastern face, above the door leading to the catechism room, is adorned with a David standing beside a resurrected figure pushing back the lid of his sarcophagus whilst a figure of Death brandishes a scythe. The confessional is set against the south wall of the south arm of the transept. Above, three scenes are represented: at the centre, a Christ Good Shepherd, surrounded by six lambs, Christ and the Samaritan Woman to the right, the Christ Redeemer, blessing a kneeling man. On the reverse of the western façade, to the north side, at the chapel of the baptismal fonts, Jesus baptizes a child whom a woman presents to him. On the south side, a Christ on the cross places his right hand on that of his Father treated in a monumental fashion. A small figure prostrates itself in the lower part. On either side of the church entrance, two monumental figures, very hieratic, stylized, treated flatly are depicted. These are Saint Martin and Joan of Arc. The walls of the aisles are covered with 14 stations of the Way of the Cross. The stained-glass windows currently visible are the work of Léon called Claude Blanchet.
