History
Fortified site attested from the 11th century (circular south tower). New fortifications undertaken around the middle of the 14th century (seigniorial hall). In the Middle Ages, the castle is a transit zone for wood, wine and salt (arrangement of the cave as a warehouse) and a stopping point on the road to Saint-Jacques de Compostela. The castle consists of a circular tower, an enclosure that rests on the rock, a seigniorial hall located below, a lower courtyard and a cave arranged in the rock. The keep has a circular plan, rare in Rouergue. On the first floor, it had a slit loop with stirrup, also rare in Rouergue, and, on the second floor, a slit loop with stirrup with double crosslets, the only known specimen in Rouergue. The enclosure wall is pierced with a gate to the west. A circular tower with an open gorge defends the west wing. To the south, two small circular towers of the same type ensure flanking. The gun loops of these towers are dated to the middle of the 15th century.
