Le site de Chevré est un remarquable exemple de petit bourg castral bien conservé. L'ensemble fortifié actuel est composé de deux parties principales : une motte probablement créée vers 1159-1160, surmontée des vestiges d'un donjon circulaire construit vers 1225-1234 et entourée d'un large fossé sec ; une basse-cour située à l'est du tertre. La chapelle castrale située à proximité a dû être fondée peu après le château, probablement dans le dernier quart du 12e siècle ; elle a conservé de cette époque sa façade-pignon et une partie des murs, cependant remaniés, notamment au 16e siècle. Le bourg castral s'est développé très tôt autour de la fortification, avec la création de l'étang ; le pont qui le franchit subsiste dans son état d'origine, qui semble être celui du 13e siècle.

History
The site of Chevré is a remarkable example of a small well-preserved fortified borough. The present fortified ensemble is composed of two main parts: a motte probably created around 1159-1160, surmounted by the remains of a circular keep built around 1225-1234 and surrounded by a wide dry ditch; a bailey situated to the east of the mound. The castle chapel situated nearby must have been founded shortly after the castle, probably in the last quarter of the 12th century; it has preserved from that period its gable façade and part of the walls, however remodelled, notably in the 16th century. The fortified borough developed very early around the fortification, with the creation of the pond; the bridge which crosses it survives in its original state, which appears to be that of the 13th century.
