A first mention of a construction at Mestual appears in 1542. The majority of the buildings and installations date from the second half of the 19th century, the most recent part being the glue and gelatine factory which was added in 1872, but activity was already attested on the site in 1730. It was the work of a family named Abgrall, the business was taken over in 1750 by Jean Rannou, then, from 1840 onwards, by the Jaffres family. The tanning mill was converted into a house. The capacity of the drying sheds is estimated at 350 hides.
