La distillerie de la verveine du Velay fut fondée en 1859. L'immeuble actuel a été construit par l'architecte Proy en 1906, et est représentatif de l'architecture commerciale de la fin du 19e siècle où la façade était conçue comme une enseigne publicitaire destinée à attirer l'oeil. History
The vervain liqueur distillery of Velay was founded in 1859. The current building was constructed by architect Proy in 1906, and is representative of commercial architecture of the end of the 19th century where the facade was designed as a public sign intended to catch the eye. It accommodates a sales shop and tasting room on the ground floor, the owner's accommodation and, to the rear, the distillery. Ornamentation is reserved for the ironwork and the sculptures of the pediments and door framings. The original element is the turret surmounted by a dome adorned with stained glass created by Charles Borie. The dome consists of a zinc frame. Lighting was provided for the vervain letters by a network of light bulbs and glass spheres. This turret was accessible inside by a laminated wood staircase. In the vestibule, a stained-glass window represents a young girl with hair scattered with flowers, in the manner of Mucha, symbolising the vervain of Velay. A large painting dated 1907, by Joseph Bernard, illustrates the harvesting of vervain with, in the background, views of the site of Puy-en-Velay.
