La bastide d'Eymet fut implantée à l'intérieur d'une boucle du Dropt. Pour traverser la rivière, un pont fut construit et constituait la voie de passage vers Bergerac. Le pont de Bretou, appelé aussi Pont romain, Vieux pont ou Pont neuf, est implanté probablement sur l'emplacement d'un gué ancien. L'ouvrage présente trois arches extradossées dont la plus petite sert au délestage des eaux qui sont détournées du courant principal par la présence d'un îlot qui forme le troisième point d'appui de la construction. Le pont présente une légère courbure qui s'oppose au courant. Il est pourvu de deux avant-becs dont l'un est triangulaire et l'autre rectangulaire, et constituent des refuges pour les piétons.

History
The bastide of Eymet was established within a loop of the Dropt. To cross the river, a bridge was built and constituted the passage way towards Bergerac. The bridge of Bretou, also called Roman Bridge, Old Bridge or New Bridge, is probably established on the site of an ancient ford. The structure presents three extradossed arches, the smallest of which serves to relieve the waters that are diverted from the main current by the presence of an islet that forms the third point of support for the construction. The bridge presents a slight curve which opposes the current. It is equipped with two cutwaters, one triangular and the other rectangular, which constitute refuges for pedestrians.
