Succédant à un premier hôtel de l'Athénée, édifié en 1865, rue des Mathurins, l'actuel hôtel Plaza-Athénée est construit sur l'avenue Montaigne en deux campagnes, entre 1912 et 1919. C'est un hôtel de luxe de sept étages, réalisé dans un style éclectique par l'architecte Charles Lefebvre (auteur de l'hôtel Claridge sur l'avenue des Champs-Elysées). A l'occasion d'un changement de propriétaire en 1933, l'hôtel est modernisé. Il ouvre de nouveau en 1936 ; le restaurant "Le Relais-Plaza" est adjoint à l'établissement à cette date (voir notice PA00132982). Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il est occupé successivement par les commandements allemand puis américain. Il retrouvera son activité commerciale en 1946. En 1970, le rez-de-chaussée est modifié : le salon Montaigne est créé à cette occasion par la réunion de l'ancien salon de lecture et du salon dit "Régence". La salle à manger a été réhabilitée en 1984.

History
Succeeding a first Athénée hotel, built in 1865, on rue des Mathurins, the current Plaza-Athénée hotel is constructed on avenue Montaigne in two campaigns, between 1912 and 1919. It is a seven-storey luxury hotel, realised in an eclectic style by architect Charles Lefebvre (author of the Claridge hotel on avenue des Champs-Elysées). On the occasion of a change of ownership in 1933, the hotel is modernised. It reopens in 1936; the restaurant "Le Relais-Plaza" is added to the establishment at this date (see entry PA00132982). During the Second World War, it is occupied successively by German and then American commands. It resumes its commercial activity in 1946. In 1970, the ground floor is modified: the Montaigne salon is created on this occasion by the union of the former reading room and the salon called "Régence". The dining room was rehabilitated in 1984.
