Historique

History
The seigneury of Folgoux is attested in 1318, and depended on the high justice of the abbey of la Chaise-Dieu. The castle was probably constructed in 1344, the date inscribed on the wall. The castle was burned and pillaged around 1590 during the Wars of Religion. A few old elements remain, such as the kitchen fireplace, the square tower with its spiral staircase as well as the window. The edifice was rebuilt at the beginning of the 17th century. In 1785, the owner proceeded to refurbish. The domain comprises a fortified house with outbuildings and gardens. A gateway gives access to a first courtyard surrounded by outbuildings to the east and west. It is closed to the north by a wall and a gateway which gives access to a second inner courtyard delimited on the west side by the continuation of the outbuildings, on the north side by the dwelling-house and on the east side by the wall and gateway of the garden. The castle itself, rectangular in plan, is composed of the juxtaposition of two adjoining bodies of buildings. The first, to the west, represents the original dwelling; the second is furnished in its centre with a square stair tower. A round and low tower, situated at the south-east angle, houses the chapel. The gardens were formerly laid out in the French manner. Inside the castle, decorations of the 17th and 18th centuries.
