La construction d'un nouveau marché avait été envisagée dès 1859, par suite de l'encombrement du marché en plein air établi devant l'hôtel de ville, et du marché annexe de la place Bouillaud. La construction fut autorisée en 1886, avec percement d'une nouvelle voie d'accès depuis l'hôtel de ville. L'architecte en fut Edouard Varin. La halle se compose d'un double corps de bâtiments inscrits dans un rectangle, disposés autour d'une rue centrale formant lanterneau intérieur. Deux entrées latérales sont placées au milieu des longs côtés, abritées par une marquise portée par deux colonnettes en fonte, et reliées au niveau du sol par une rampe ou un escalier, de façon à rattraper la déclivité du terrain vers le rempart. Le marché comprend ainsi un étage de caves. Le décor se concentre sur la façade principale, avec un portail d'entrée en pierre, surmonté d'une horloge. Une horloge se trouve également sur la façade opposée. les colonnes de section octogonale reposent sur un soubassement en maçonnerie de hauteur variable. Le remplissage des façades est en briques (motif de losanges) en partie inférieure, puis par rideau vitré au-dessus. La partie inférieure du rideau vitré, anciennement dotée de persiennes en bois, a été refaite en 1960 en tôles ondulées de PVC translucide. History
The construction of a new market had been envisaged from 1859 onwards, as a result of the overcrowding of the open-air market established in front of the town hall, and of the annexe market in place Bouillaud. Construction was authorised in 1886, with the opening of a new access road from the town hall. The architect was Edouard Varin. The hall consists of a double body of buildings inscribed in a rectangle, arranged around a central street forming an internal lantern. Two lateral entrances are placed in the middle of the long sides, sheltered by a marquee supported by two cast iron colonnettes, and connected at ground level by a ramp or a staircase, so as to overcome the slope of the terrain towards the rampart. The market thus comprises a basement storey. The decoration is concentrated on the main façade, with a stone entrance portal, surmounted by a clock. A clock is also found on the opposite façade. The columns of octagonal section rest on a masonry plinth of variable height. The filling of the façades is in bricks (lozenge pattern) in the lower part, then by glazed screen above. The lower part of the glazed screen, formerly equipped with wooden shutters, was remade in 1960 in translucent corrugated PVC sheeting. A zinc frieze decorated with the city's coat of arms covers the gutter.
