La maison forte de Vertrieu est mentionnée dès 1289. En 1355, le Rhône devient frontière entre la Savoie et le Dauphiné, et le château fait alors partie d'une série de forteresses le long du fleuve. Entre 1638 et 1664, le château Neuf est édifié au bord du Rhône pour répondre au nouveau mode de vie de l'époque. Le château Vieux est dès lors laissé à l'abandon. Des restaurations et aménagements sont entrepris vers 1840 sur le corps de garde de la basse cour. Le reste des bâtiments est conservé comme ruines romantiques.

History
The stronghouse of Vertrieu is mentioned as early as 1289. In 1355, the Rhône becomes the border between Savoy and Dauphiné, and the castle then forms part of a series of fortresses along the river. Between 1638 and 1664, the New Castle is built on the banks of the Rhône to respond to the new lifestyle of the period. The Old Castle is from then on left abandoned. Restorations and alterations are undertaken around 1840 on the guard room of the lower courtyard. The rest of the buildings is preserved as romantic ruins.
