Existence des remparts dès le 9e siècle, avec une extension jusqu'au 13e siècle. L'enceinte était composée de fossés secs, de courtines avec contreforts et de tours circulaires ou carrées. Les quatre portes principales combinaient la herse, l'assommoir et les vantaux. Reconstructions et réparations jusqu'au milieu du 17e siècle. En 1595, construction de la citadelle par Antoine Estienne. Au 18e siècle, comblement des fossés. Au 19e siècle, restauration de la citadelle. Des 18 portes du 13e siècle, en restent trois des plus importantes. Une dizaine de tours, sur une quarantaine, subsistent encore, sans aménagements intérieurs.

History
Existence of ramparts from the 9th century, with extension until the 13th century. The enclosure was composed of dry moats, curtains with buttresses and circular or square towers. The four principal gates combined the portcullis, the machicolation and the doors. Reconstructions and repairs until the mid-17th century. In 1595, construction of the citadel by Antoine Estienne. In the 18th century, the moats were filled in. In the 19th century, restoration of the citadel. Of the 18 gates of the 13th century, three of the most important remain. About ten towers, out of some forty, still subsist, without interior fittings.
