History
Foundation of the bishopric in the early 6th century. Of the palace damaged in 1112 there remains the north gable of the east wing. The openings retain small columns and capitals from the late 11th – early 12th century. Construction of a new building in the 12th century, of which there remain the double chapel dedicated to saint-Nicolas and the main fabric of the east wing. In the 16th century, the north wing is extended towards the west and the courtyard is closed by a fortified gate probably from the 14th century. From 1681 to 1683, works are undertaken by the architect Antoine Totin: partial reconstruction of the east and south wings; overhaul of the roof structure of the great hall. From 1792 to 1800, the former bishopric serves as the seat of the district administration. Subsequently, it becomes the courthouse and is fitted out for. In 1823, destruction of the fortified gate, replaced by a grille in 1895. Chapel restored in 1880. Great hall of the north wing restored in 1950.
