Historique
Oeuvre unique au monde et seule réalisation architecturale inspirée du phalanstère, société communautaire unissant vie collective et association de production, élaborée par l'économiste et philosophe Charles Fournier (1772-1837). Ce système modifié et repensé par Jean-Baptiste-André Godin (1817-1888) , créateur du célèbre poêle en bronze du même nom et qui implanta à Guise dès 1846 une usine employant alors une trentaine d'ouvriers, se traduisit par la construction non loin de cette usine et dans un des méandres de l'Oise, d'un vaste ensemble de bâtiments construits pour la plupart entre 1849 et 1883, et qui devraient être désignés sous le nom de Palais Social. Cet ensemble architectural, en grande partie conservé aujourd'hui, se compose d'un groupe de logements constitué de trois immeubles de 4 étages comportant chacun une cour intérieure couverte par une verrière, d'un groupe de bâtiments associant le théâtre et les écoles, d'un bâtiment abritant jadis lavoirs et bains et d'un économat. Un kiosque à musique et un jardin complètent cet ensemble. Quoique endommagés partiellement en 1914-1918, les logements ont préservé leur unité originelle.

History
Unique work in the world and the only architectural realization inspired by the phalanstère, a communitarian society combining collective life and production partnership, developed by the economist and philosopher Charles Fourier (1772-1837). This system modified and rethought by Jean-Baptiste-André Godin (1817-1888), creator of the famous bronze stove of the same name and who established a factory at Guise from 1846 employing around thirty workers, resulted in the construction not far from this factory and in one of the bends of the Oise, of a vast set of buildings constructed mostly between 1849 and 1883, and which should be designated under the name of Social Palace. This architectural ensemble, largely preserved today, consists of a group of dwellings made up of three four-storey buildings each containing an interior courtyard covered by a glass roof, a group of buildings associating the theatre and schools, a building formerly housing laundries and baths and a co-operative store. A music kiosk and a garden complete this ensemble. Although partially damaged in 1914-1918, the dwellings have preserved their original unity.
