L'enceinte de l'ancien castrum de Senlis couvrait une superficie de plus de 6 hectares ; elle constitue l'une des enceintes les mieux conservées du nord de la Gaule aux 3e-4e siècles. Cette enceinte du Bas-Empire, de forme ovoïde, comprend une courtine constituée d'un double parement de moellons approximativement carrés (opus vittatum) qui emprisonne un remplissage de moellons disposés en vrac et liés au mortier de chaux, sable et brique pilée (opus caementicium). Le tout repose sur un puissant libage composé de blocs de grand appareil utilisés en réemploi et provenant d'édifices détruits de la ville du Haut-Empire. La courtine était scandée de 26 tours, hémicirculaires vers l'extérieur et de plan carré vers l'intérieur, dont 15 subsistent actuellement en élévation, partielle ou totale.

History
The enclosure of the old castrum of Senlis covered an area of more than 6 hectares; it constitutes one of the best-preserved enclosures of northern Gaul in the 3rd-4th centuries. This Late Empire enclosure, of ovoid form, comprises a curtain wall consisting of a double facing of approximately square rubble stone (opus vittatum) which encloses a filling of rubble stones laid haphazardly and bound with mortar of lime, sand and crushed brick (opus caementicium). The whole rests on a powerful foundation composed of large ashlar blocks used in secondary use and coming from destroyed buildings of the city of the High Empire. The curtain wall was punctuated by 26 towers, hemicircular towards the exterior and of square plan towards the interior, of which 15 still remain in elevation, partial or total.
