Historique
Le château, bâti selon un plan quasi circulaire autour d'une cour centrale, est d'origine médiévale. Les constructions du logis, qui s'échelonnent du 13e au 17e siècles, sont adossées à une épaisse courtine circulaire implantée sur un éperon dominant le lit du fleuve. Si les bâtiments déployés autour du porche portent encore l'empreinte défensive de la maison forte médiévale, la tour carrée à pans coupés abritant un escalier en vis monumental évoque le raffinement urbain du gothique tardif à l'orée de la Renaissance. En partie détruit au cours des premiers épisodes de la guerre de Cent ans, le château fut reconstruit vers 1383. Il constitue alors un point stratégique que se disputent l'armée royale et les Anglo-Bourguignons. Entouré de fossés encore visibles aujourd'hui, il offre un ensemble cohérent aux strates historiques riches. Le colombier situé au nord du château renforce cette impression ainsi que les communs des 18e et 19e siècles.

History
The château, built according to an almost circular plan around a central courtyard, is of medieval origin. The constructions of the main dwelling, which span the 13th to 17th centuries, are set against a thick circular curtain wall built on a promontory dominating the course of the river. Whilst the buildings deployed around the porch still bear the imprint of the defensive character of the medieval fortified house, the square tower with chamfered corners housing a monumental winding staircase evokes the refinement and urbanity of late Gothic on the eve of the Renaissance. Partly destroyed during the early episodes of the Hundred Years War, the château was rebuilt around 1383. It then constituted a strategic point disputed by the royal army and the Anglo-Burgundians. Surrounded by moats still visible today, it presents a coherent ensemble with rich historical strata. The dovecote situated to the north of the château reinforces this impression as do the service buildings of the 18th and 19th centuries.
