Construite en 1841 par Jean Lambert-Fournet sur le site d'un moulin à blé, l'usine a d'abord filé le lin, puis, à la faveur de l'essor du fromage de Livarot, fut aménagée en fabrique de boîte d'emballage et louée (1899) à Georges Leroy et à Eugène Ridel ; ceux-ci s'orientèrent, en 1911, vers les produits en contreplaqué. Incendiée en 1919, l'usine servit de séchoir. La protection a porté sur le bâtiment abritant une machine à vapeur et ses chaudières. Seule a pu être sauvegardée la machine. Sorti des établissements Crépelle de Lille à la fin du 19e siècle, d'un modèle à traction directe horizontale, monocylindrique, à détente variable avec un régulateur Corliss, l'engin avait été acquis en 1905 par la Société des Mines de La Bellière (Orne) et aussitôt transféré à Livarot. Il alignait une puissance de 300 chevaux et produisait de l'électricité, d'abord en courant continu, au moyen d'une dynamo Breguet, puis, après adjonction d'un générateur-alternateur, en courant alternatif. Cette machine, protégée au titre des objets, a fonctionné jusqu'en 1968 et a cessé toute activité en 1988.

History
Built in 1841 by Jean Lambert-Fournet on the site of a grain mill, the factory first spun flax, then, with the growth of Livarot cheese, was converted into a packing-box factory and leased (1899) to Georges Leroy and Eugène Ridel; these two men turned, in 1911, towards plywood products. Destroyed by fire in 1919, the factory served as a drying shed. Protection was extended to the building housing a steam engine and its boilers. Only the engine was able to be preserved. Coming from the Crépelle establishments of Lille at the end of the 19th century, of a direct horizontal traction model, single-cylinder, with variable expansion and a Corliss governor, the engine had been acquired in 1905 by the La Bellière Mines Company (Orne) and immediately transferred to Livarot. It boasted a power of 300 horsepower and produced electricity, first in direct current, by means of a Breguet dynamo, then, after the addition of a generator-alternator, in alternating current. This machine, protected as an object, operated until 1968 and ceased all activity in 1988.
