Historique
La citadelle fut réalisée sur les plans de Vauban en 1668. Il s'agit d'un pentagone irrégulier allongé vers la campagne. En 1680-82, les casernes Schramm sont construites et l'édification du magasin aux Allées survient en 1775. En 1702, l'Esplanade de la citadelle est organisée pour recevoir les promenades et sera remplacée, en partie, par un jardin à l'anglaise au 19ème siècle. Les bâtiments situés à l'intérieur de la citadelle n'ont pas évolué alors que l'extérieur a été renforcé par une série de glacis. Quant au polygone du Génie, il apparaît au cours du 19ème siècle à l'avant des trois bastions externes de la citadelle. Les bâtiments du carré intérieur de la place d'armes datent presque tous du 17ème siècle : on compte, entre autres, la Porte Royale, la chapelle, l'Arsenal qui est l'élément le plus important de cet ensemble pour sa volumétrie et sa qualité architecturale.

History
The citadel was built on Vauban's plans in 1668. It is an irregular pentagon elongated towards the countryside. In 1680-82, the Schramm barracks are built and the construction of the storehouse at the Allées occurs in 1775. In 1702, the Esplanade of the citadel is organised to receive promenades and will be replaced, in part, by an English garden in the 19th century. The buildings situated inside the citadel did not evolve whereas the exterior was reinforced by a series of glacis. As for the Engineer's polygon, it appears during the 19th century in front of the three external bastions of the citadel. The buildings of the inner square of the parade ground date almost entirely from the 17th century: among others, the Royal Gate, the chapel, the Arsenal which is the most important element of this complex for its volumetry and architectural quality.
