The Ministère de la Culture's notice
Historique

History
It was at the Chaudron estate that many of the innovations brought to Réunion for sugar production were tested, from 1813 onwards, before being generalized. Only vestiges remain of the factories that succeeded one another on the Chaudron site: the partly ruined tower of a windmill, warehouses, stables. The organization of space is classical. In 1897, the master's house was to the south of the road, surrounded by a park. To the east were found the dwellings of the servants, the kitchens, sheds and stables. To the south, the working buildings, stables, forges, dwellings of the workers (more than 200 people); to the west, the sugar factory, sugar mill, distillery, and one of the rare windmills built to handle (crush) the cane. The windmill, which is dated 1827 on the key of the arch of an opening, was built by Fréon as a complement to the steam mill following an expansion of the estate.
