Grand bâtiment construit à partir de 1776 sous la direction du père Ignace Jourbin des Marcères, procureur du prieuré-hospice Saint-Honoré, destiné vraisemblablement à accroître le domaine hospitalier ou religieux de Saint-Martin-de-Ré. Le 13 décembre 1776, une ordonnance de Louis XVI destine le lieu au futur logement des cadets de la noblesse, futurs officiers dans les bataillons coloniaux. A son achèvement en 1779, Louis XVI ordonne à G. de Sartine, ministre de la Marine, d'acquérir l'hôtel qui abrita pendant dix ans l'école composée d'une compagnie. Elle fut dissoute en 1789. En 1793, elle est désignée comme bien national mais revient finalement à l'hospice en 1804. En 1891, la mairie et le tribunal s'y installent à nouveau. En 1907, ouverture du musée E. Cognacq. L'édifice présente un plan rectangulaire. La façade sud, sur rue, est la plus ornée. Elle se compose d'une longue partie centrale flanquée, à chaque extrémité, d'un élément décroché en saillie, avec chaînes d'angle se raccordant avec les refends dont tout le rez-de-chaussée est garni jusqu'au bandeau saillant délimitant les deux étages supérieurs.

History
Large building constructed from 1776 under the direction of Father Ignace Jourbin des Marcères, procurator of the priory-hospice of Saint-Honoré, apparently intended to expand the hospital or religious domain of Saint-Martin-de-Ré. On 13 December 1776, an ordinance of Louis XVI designated the place as future lodging for cadets of the nobility, future officers in the colonial battalions. Upon its completion in 1779, Louis XVI ordered G. de Sartine, Minister of the Navy, to acquire the hotel which housed for ten years the school composed of one company. It was dissolved in 1789. In 1793, it was designated as national property but ultimately returned to the hospice in 1804. In 1891, the town hall and tribunal were installed there again. In 1907, the E. Cognacq museum was opened. The building presents a rectangular plan. The south facade, on the street, is the most ornamented. It is composed of a long central section flanked, at each end, by a recessed projecting element, with angle chains connecting with the rustication with which the entire ground floor is fitted up to the projecting band delimiting the two upper storeys.
