Le château actuel ne semble pas remonter au-delà du 14e siècle. Au début du 19e siècle, le château devient ferme puis est peu à peu abandonné et pillé. L'édifice était entouré de douves au passage assuré par un pont-levis. Une partie importante de l'enceinte fortifiée, appuyée de tours carrées et rondes, subsiste. Les bâtiments à l'intérieur de la cour, remaniés aux 16e et 17e siècles, présentent une structure très complexe. La rareté des sites fortifiés de cette importance en Saintonge, donne un intérêt tout particulier à ce château.

History
The present castle does not appear to date back beyond the 14th century. In the early 19th century, the castle became a farm and was then gradually abandoned and plundered. The building was surrounded by moats with access ensured by a drawbridge. An important part of the fortified enceinte, supported by square and round towers, survives. The buildings within the courtyard, modified in the 16th and 17th centuries, present a very complex structure. The rarity of fortified sites of this importance in Saintonge gives this castle particular significance.
