Historique

History
Towers, postern and underground fountain: 17th century; Theatre hall: third quarter 19th century. From the old feudal castle, there remains only the postern and an isolated tower, connected to the main body by a great hall. The moat in front of the drawbridge was filled to allow communication from the public square to the buildings of the town hall and the sub-prefecture. The towers flanking the postern have retained their defences. At each one, the arrow slits have been retained or enlarged. Stone staircases serve each floor and lead to the wall-walk. This passage appears to have been uncovered, as evidenced by the gargoyles. The crenellation features machicolations with arrow slits in the middle of the merlons. The fountain located in the basement of the sub-prefecture presents a niche and niche frame decorated with sculptures imitating stalactites. Sculpted mask. The fountain was probably built by Léon de Sainte-Maure, Count of Jonzac, who enlarged and embellished the castle in the middle of the 17th century. In a former service court of the castle, a theatre was built in the 19th century, the final plan having been approved in 1861. It is a circular building of approximately 300 seats. Two storeys are fitted out as boxes. The partitions of the corridors and gallery delimiting the boxes were removed around 1950. The work of painting and decoration of the hall, as well as the décor, were to be entrusted to M. Betton, decorator of the French theatre in Bordeaux.
