L'ancienne place forte de Brouage a été créé de toute pièce par Richelieu, au début du 17e siècle. De cette place subsistent les anciennes fortifications. A l'intérieur de l'enceinte sont groupées les maisons le long de rues en damier, maisons basses, datant presque toutes des 17e et 18e siècles. Deux poudrières et les casernes anciennes appartenaient à la défense du site. Brouage est l'un des rares types complets subsistant de ville forte de plaine du 17e siècle, antérieure à Vauban.

History
The former stronghold of Brouage was created entirely by Richelieu at the beginning of the 17th century. From this stronghold subsist the old fortifications. Within the enclosure are grouped houses along streets in a grid pattern, low houses, almost all dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Two powder magazines and the old barracks belonged to the defence of the site. Brouage is one of the rare complete types surviving of a 17th-century plain stronghold town, earlier than Vauban.
