History
The town is encircled by high fortifications in the Vauban style, offering a defence to the stronghold whose fire converged, with that of the Chapus, to defend the access of the Seudre and the Charente. These walls, cut with re-entrants and projections, support several corner turrets and corbelled culs-de-lampe and shelter several bastions. The citadel constructed within the fortifications, contains numerous barracks. Access is by a monumental gate decorated with fasces and a coat of arms dated 1630, the period of construction of the citadel, the gate being more recent (Empire period).
