Construite durant le deuxième quart du 17e siècle, l'usine est la plus représentative du pays charentais qui fut l'un des principaux foyers de papeterie européens grâce à l'essor du commerce atlantique et aux échanges privilégiés vers les pays du nord (Angleterre, Provinces-Unies, Suède, Allemagne). La longueur exceptionnelle de ses étendoirs, percés de baies régulières à l'étage, indique l'importance de ses capacités. Le rôle de Gastumeau, négociant rochelais qui exploitait et commercialisait au début du 18e siècle les papiers de Puymoyen, pesa dans la modernisation de l'infrastructure technique des papeteries françaises, notamment dans l'adoption de la pile hollandaise. Le moulin de Puymoyen (construit en 1537) continue de produire à la main, grâce à une turbine, des papiers recherchés pour les éditions de luxe.

History
Constructed during the second quarter of the 17th century, the mill is the most representative of the Charente region which was one of the principal centres of European papermaking thanks to the growth of Atlantic commerce and privileged exchanges with northern countries (England, United Provinces, Sweden, Germany). The exceptional length of its drying-lofts, pierced with regular openings on the upper floor, indicates the importance of its capacity. The role of Gastumeau, merchant of La Rochelle who exploited and marketed at the beginning of the 18th century the papers of Puymoyen, influenced the modernization of the technical infrastructure of French paper mills, in particular in the adoption of the Dutch engine. The Puymoyen mill (built in 1537) continues to produce by hand, thanks to a turbine, papers sought for luxury editions.
