La première enceinte établie sur la crête rocheuse est encore visible au nord, près du marché couvert, situé à l'emplacement même qu'occupait l'ancien château qui protégeait la ville. Partant de ce point, le rempart suivait la falaise vers l'ouest puis se retournait au sud. Le mur de ce rempart fut construit par assises de pierre de taille, de grandes dimensions, posées à joints vifs sans mortier. Ce rempart était constitué par deux parements formant pratiquement deux murs entre lesquels avaient été entassés des débris de pierres moulurées, de fûts de colonnes, de bas-reliefs, de chapiteaux et de statues provenant de la destruction de constructions antérieures. Le parement de cette première enceinte, qui pourrait remonter au 4e siècle, laisse apparaître, à la partie supérieure des pierres, les trous ayant servi à les monter et à les mettre en place. Il subsiste en outre les restes de deux tours carrées, situées près de l'entrée du jardin public, sans doute bâties au 11e siècle pour flanquer la courtine. Au pied du marché couvert se trouvent également, dérasées, trois tours demi-cylindriques qui protégeaient les abords du château primitif. Cette première enceinte fut complétée, à la fin du 12e siècle, par une suite de remparts disposés pour envelopper le château neuf et défendre la partie orientale de la ville. Les parties subsistantes de ce dispositif laissent voir les restes de trois tours demi-cylindriques qui flanquaient ce rempart. A la fin du 13e siècle, l'importance du faubourg Saint-Martial fut jugée assez grande pour justifier sa protection. On construisit une suite de courtines et de tours demi-cylindriques qui englobaient, dans leur tracé, le champs de Mars actuel pour rejoindre l'emplacement de l'ancien château. Cette enceinte a disparu presque complètement, hormis quelques restes de courtines et de tours percées de meutrières à canons.

History
The first fortification established on the rocky crest is still visible to the north, near the covered market, situated at the very location occupied by the old castle which protected the city. Starting from this point, the rampart followed the cliff towards the west then turned to the south. The wall of this rampart was constructed by courses of large ashlar stone, laid with close joints without mortar. This rampart was made up of two faces forming practically two walls between which had been heaped debris of moulded stones, column shafts, bas-reliefs, capitals and statues from the destruction of earlier constructions. The face of this first fortification, which could date back to the 4th century, shows, at the upper part of the stones, the holes which served to mount and put them in place. There remain moreover the remains of two square towers, situated near the entrance to the public garden, no doubt built in the 11th century to flank the curtain wall. At the foot of the covered market are also found, razed, three semi-cylindrical towers which protected the approaches of the original castle. This first fortification was completed, at the end of the 12th century, by a series of ramparts arranged to surround the new castle and defend the eastern part of the city. The remaining parts of this scheme show the remains of three semi-cylindrical towers which flanked this rampart. At the end of the 13th century, the importance of the Saint-Martial suburb was judged large enough to justify its protection. A series of curtain walls and semi-cylindrical towers was constructed which encompassed, in their course, the current Champs de Mars to join the location of the old castle. This fortification has disappeared almost completely, except for some remains of curtain walls and towers pierced with gun embrasures.
