Originaire de Banyuls, le sculpteur Aristide Maillol (1861-1944) a réalisé des monuments aux morts dans quatre localités proches de son pays natal : Banyuls, Elne, Céret (voir notice PA00104185) et Port-Vendres. Cette ville commande son monument le 25 mai 1919 et l'inaugure en 1923. Il représente une femme à demi-couchée, le buste relevé, accoudée et tenant un rameau de laurier. Il est inspiré par le monument à Cézanne que la ville d'Aix avait commandé à Maillol en 1912, puis refusé. La statue, réalisée en pierre, a subi l'érosion des vents marins ainsi que des actes de vandalisme.

History
Originating from Banyuls, the sculptor Aristide Maillol (1861-1944) created war memorials in four localities near his native region: Banyuls, Elne, Céret (see notice PA00104185) and Port-Vendres. This town commissioned his monument on 25 May 1919 and inaugurated it in 1923. It depicts a woman half-reclining, bust raised, leaning on her elbow and holding a laurel branch. It was inspired by the monument to Cézanne which the town of Aix had commissioned from Maillol in 1912, then rejected. The statue, made of stone, has suffered from erosion caused by sea winds as well as acts of vandalism.
