Pendant le 11e siècle, les comptes de Conflent et de Cerdagne avaient leur palais à Corneilla et y résidaient. Par la suite, Corneilla demeura un centre important, siège d'un bailliage royal. Le château, aujourd'hui remplacé par diverses constructions, fut dès l'origine entouré d'une ceinture fortifiée. Cette enceinte séparait le château de l'église prieurale. La tour ronde n'est probablement pas antérieure au 12e siècle. Elle présente quelques assises en galets disposés en épi. La courtine adjacente ainsi que l'ancienne porte d'accès au chemin de ronde, paraissent indiquer une époque antérieure au 13e ou 14e siècle.

History
During the 11th century, the counts of Conflent and Cerdagne had their palace at Corneilla and resided there. Subsequently, Corneilla remained an important centre, seat of a royal bailliage. The castle, today replaced by various buildings, was from the outset surrounded by a fortified belt. This enclosure separated the castle from the prioral church. The round tower is probably not earlier than the 12th century. It presents some courses of pebbles arranged in herringbone. The adjacent curtain wall as well as the former access door to the crenellated parapet, seem to indicate a period earlier than the 13th or 14th century.
