History

Dedicated to Notre-Dame, this church of the cemetery should not be confused with that of the château of Castelnou which was the seat of a priory that received donations in the 12th century. The single nave without chapels is extended, to the east, by a semi-circular apse narrower and lower, covered, like the nave, with barrel tiles. The sacristy, modern, was built, slightly at an angle, to the north-east of the apse. A square bell tower, also modern, was raised on the south-west corner of the nave. The south portal consists of two outer round-arched rolls and a rectangular door covered with a lintel surmounted by a solid tympanum and a round arch. The impost is a continuous band turning back at each pier. The two doors, old, each present six horizontal rails of wrought iron, ramified in spiralled scrolls. Other spirals complete the composition without regard to symmetry and are simply juxtaposed. The free spaces are filled either with double C-scrolls or with S-scrolls of varying forms and dimensions. The whole is fitted with round-headed nails and the lower rails are chiselled. Above this door, a painted sun-dial bears the date of 1828.
