Historique
Le bâtiment, fut construit sur l'emplacement de l'ancien château de Mende dont il restait une tour à l'angle sud-est, et celui des remparts médiévaux, fut élevé en 1668 et affecté à l'enseignement religieux, d'abord collège des doctrinaires puis laïc. La tour (15e siècle) à l'angle sud-est abritait un escalier à vis. A l'est, un corps de bâtiment présentait une élévation à deux étages côté sud et un comble à trois étages côté nord. La porte d'entrée, au sud, était surmontée d'un fronton interrompu, orné d'armoiries. La façade nord fut surélevée au 19e siècle. L'intérieur conservait, au rez-de-chaussée et au premier, des salles voûtées. Les voûtes du rez-de-chaussée reposaient sur des colonnes à chapiteaux ioniques ; celles du premier sur des pilastres. L'ancien collège a été démoli dans les années 1970.

History
The building was constructed on the site of the old castle of Mende of which remained a tower at the south-east angle, and that of the medieval ramparts, was erected in 1668 and dedicated to religious education, first as a college of Doctrinarians then as a lay institution. The tower (15th century) at the south-east angle housed a spiral staircase. To the east, a building section presented an elevation with two storeys on the south side and a roof with three storeys on the north side. The entrance door, on the south, was surmounted by an interrupted pediment, decorated with arms. The north facade was raised in the 19th century. The interior preserved, on the ground floor and first floor, vaulted halls. The vaults of the ground floor rested on columns with Ionic capitals; those of the first on pilasters. The old college was demolished in the 1970s.
