Dating from the 13th century, the castle has been closely linked to the history of troubles and wars affecting Gévaudan over five centuries. The fortified complex comprises a vast square keep flanked by a high round tower on one side, various ancillary constructions and defensive works. The Renaissance period is represented by the mullioned windows of the former seigneurial dwelling as well as interior mural paintings (chapel, west building). This fortified castle is a witness to military architecture of the 13th and 14th centuries with arrangement of a natural defensive site, double curtain wall, keep and important local seigneurie which exploited neighbouring silver mines. It also preserves sculpted and painted decoration which makes it one of the rare civil buildings of this region to have preserved them.
