History

The upper part of the village is dominated by two castles corresponding to the two co-lordships of Soubès. The principal lordship would go back to the 10th century but the "castrum" appears in texts only from the middle of the 12th century, a period to which the construction of the medieval castle should be dated, whose essential parts would rather go back to the 13th century. This building, called a keep, is established on a rocky promontory reshaped for its defence (in the basement, two barrel-vaulted cellars are partly hewn from the tuff). Its tall rectangular mass presents regular coursing with openings of Romanesque character, corbels for brattice and, at the top, for a hourd. The south façade was transformed with 18th-century openings before a terrace overhanging on arcades, with balustrade. Inside, the noble floor possesses a double Gothic fireplace. Under the roof space, round-arch openings now blocked and architectural elements testify to multiple alterations.
