En 936, Raymond Pons, comte de Toulouse et duc d'Aquitaine, fonda à Thomières le monastère bénédictin de Saint-Pons. L'acte qui autorise la construction de murailles autour du couvent ne date que de 1171 mais, même dans ses infrastructures, la tour ne semble pas dater de cette campagne. Plus vraisemblablement, sa construction doit se situer après l'érection de l'abbaye en évêché (1318), en accord avec les caractères de la voûte de la salle basse. L'hôtel de ville occupe l'ancien emplacement de l'évêché. Les anciennes constructions ont été conservées dans la partie sud, et prolongées au nord par des bâtiments nouveaux. De tous les bâtiments primitifs, seule la tour est intéressante. C'est une puissante construction sur plan barlong qui défendait l'angle sud-ouest des remparts, non loin des rives du Jaur et entre deux décrochements de l'enceinte. En raison de sa situation en angle saillant, elle a été munie de mâchicoulis sur les deux faces exposées à l'extérieur de la ville. History
In 936, Raymond Pons, Count of Toulouse and Duke of Aquitaine, founded at Thomières the Benedictine monastery of Saint-Pons. The deed which authorises the construction of walls around the convent dates only to 1171 but, even in its infrastructure, the tower does not appear to date from this campaign. More likely, its construction should be placed after the elevation of the abbey to a bishopric (1318), in keeping with the characteristics of the vault of the lower hall. The town hall occupies the former location of the bishopric. The old buildings have been preserved in the southern part, and extended to the north by new buildings. Of all the primitive buildings, only the tower is noteworthy. It is a powerful construction on an oblong plan which defended the south-west angle of the ramparts, not far from the banks of the Jaur and between two recesses of the wall. Because of its position at a projecting angle, it was provided with machicolations on the two faces exposed to the exterior of the town. The merlons and crenellations of the upper part are later repairs or recent additions. Inside, the lower storey, serving as a dungeon, is vaulted in barrel vault. Above is found a room vaulted with ribs, level with the street. The sculptures preserved allow this part to be dated to the 14th century. The storeys are served by a stone staircase situated in the adjoining wing of the buildings.
