Historique
Edifice élevé vers 1590, primitivement église de Pénitents Noirs. Les Etats du Languedoc y tinrent plusieurs séances au cours du 17e siècle. De l'ancienne chapelle ne subsiste que l'enveloppe et la façade. La porte d'entrée principale est encadrée d'une architecture de pierre à bossages coupés de pilastres ioniques surmontés d'un entablement comprenant : frise ornée de guirlandes, corniche à denticules et fronton courbe. Vendue comme bien national, l'église est rachetée par une société locale en 1803 afin de doter la ville d'un théâtre. Jusqu'en 1947, plusieurs aménagements et décorations ont été réalisés. Le premier théâtre de 1803 est connu par une description faite en 1855 par Joseph Montgaillard, architecte de la ville. Devenue propriétaire en 1855, la ville effectue quelques modifications en 1867, puis 1884. A partir de 1897, à l'occasion des fêtes en l'honneur de Molière, la municipalité décide un réaménagement et une restauration. La salle italienne se présente sous l'aspect de sa rénovation en 1901, très significative de l'art décoratif officiel de cette époque.

History
Building erected around 1590, originally a church of the Black Penitents. The States of Languedoc held several sessions there during the 17th century. Of the old chapel only the envelope and the facade remain. The main entrance door is framed by ashlar masonry with cut bosses divided by Ionic pilasters surmounted by an entablature comprising: a frieze ornamented with garlands, a cornice with dentils and a curved pediment. Sold as national property, the church was repurchased by a local company in 1803 in order to provide the town with a theatre. Until 1947, several arrangements and decorations were carried out. The first theatre of 1803 is known through a description made in 1855 by Joseph Montgaillard, architect of the town. Having become owner in 1855, the town made some modifications in 1867, then 1884. From 1897 onwards, on the occasion of the celebrations in honour of Molière, the municipality decided on a rearrangement and restoration. The Italian-style auditorium presents itself under the aspect of its renovation in 1901, very significant of the official decorative art of that period.
