Historique

History
Built on the site of a house erected by Jacques Coeur, the hôtel de Lunaret successively served as a residence for the court of aides, the chamber of accounts, the general treasurers of France and the governors of Montpellier. Several kings resided there, notably François Ier, Charles IX and Louis XIII. The vaulted entrance passage may date from the 15th century. Acquired by the treasurers of France in 1632, the current construction was begun or remodeled at that time. Following a plan adopted by most of the great hôtels erected then at Montpellier, the buildings frame a square tower and a monumental staircase occupies one of the facades, forming a loggia on the upper floor. This facade presents a superposition of architectural orders. The attic story is particularly noteworthy for its decoration comprising, in homage to Louis XIV, two suns with the motto "nec pluribus impar". A ceiling painted by Jean de Troy, around 1690, decorates its vault. It represents Time and Justice uncovering Truth. The main dwelling on rue Jacques Coeur retains several large rooms, five of which have decorated ceilings with exposed beams, dating from the 17th century.
