Historique

History
Tradition has Louis XIV residing there during his passage through Montpellier in 1660. The construction of the building should not be much earlier than 1660. From this period date the façades, the gargoyles and the gateway. The wrought-iron grilles of the first floor should be referred to subsequent reworking. The staircase dates from 1872 and replaced an old spiral staircase. The building opens by a great bosselated gateway. The round-arch door is flanked by pilasters with dosseret blocks and surmounted by a great broken circular pediment, framing a tabernacle, itself covered by a broken triangular pediment and terminated by a ball. The bosselation of the jambs is of the funnel type. They continue, at the dosseret blocks, with flat bosselation. The apex of the arch is occupied by three adjoining keys, each decorated with a bosselation of strong projection, cut in the form of a diamond point. The façade is adorned with gargoyles still somewhat Gothic and representing grimacing monsters. The two windows of the first floor which frame the gateway are furnished with grilles of wrought iron, curved in a circular arc. They present a large panel with rectangular frame, connected at the base and to the handrail by ovals or C-scrolls. The median motif is a fleur-de-lys in a small circular cartouche, flanked by opposed C-scrolls. Tracery based on curled volutes and C-scrolls. On each side of this panel, each pilaster is formed of two straight stems, oblique, united with C-scroll volutes. The large oval oculus situated to the left of the gateway is protected by a grille composed of six spiralled volutes, with multiple coils, opposed two by two around a central circle.
