Historique

History
A church of Saint-Pierre, located at the site of the cemetery, is mentioned as early as 1096. It was replaced by a new building in 1397, ruined in 1573 by the Huguenots. Once the troubles had subsided, the consuls decided to restore it but, noting its inadequacy, they undertook in 1603 the construction of a new church in the centre of the town, at the site known as "la Camarerie". The building was not completed until 1677. In this old state, the church presented a very tall bell tower, built to the left of the entrance, and topped with a lofty spire. On 7 December 1738, this bell tower collapsed, bringing the vault down with it and causing the death of 97 victims. Its reconstruction was immediately decided upon, but at another location, to the right of the entrance. The façade wall was also entirely rebuilt. This façade is of very simple design: an axial door with a round arch is framed by pilasters and surmounted, on the first storey, by a large opening with a depressed arch. Two chains with rustication mark the location of the longitudinal walls of the nave. The whole is crowned by a large triangular pediment. These works lasted from 1740 to 1745, and were entrusted to the architect Estienne Giral. The building has a single nave, flanked by lateral chapels and terminating in a polygonal chevet. The entrance door situated in the rear wall is followed by an interior porch on piers which serves as support for the rear gallery.
