Historique

History
The building, built between 1320 and 1330, is that of the former residence of cardinal Arnaud de Via, nephew of Pope Jean XXII. Built in 1322, the chapel became collegiate in 1335. The main dwelling underwent important modifications in the 18th century. The high roof space was abandoned, the roof lowered. The whole of the residence was fortified on one side by the tower of the Doyenné (destroyed in the 18th century) and on the other by a brattice. Inside, vestiges of original fireplaces, as well as a ceiling from the 14th century. The dwelling remains an example of the residences of cardinals. With the collegiate chapel and the cloister, it forms an ensemble which testifies to the beginning of Avignon Gothic art, a compromise between French and regional formulas.
