Historique

History
King Louis the Fat had made a gift, in 1156, of the "villa" of Valliguières to the bishop of Uzès, but a part of the lordship depended on the barony of Rochefort, under the overlordship of the counts of Toulouse. In 1228, Raymond VII of Toulouse abandoned to the king this barony which fell, in 1295, to the lord of Castelnau. The lordship always remained divided between different lords according to the periods and the bishops of Uzès. The clock tower is merely a corner tower of the old castle, with the residential buildings which extend on either side. A fortified door gives access to a vaulted passage. The outer arch is followed by machicolations and an arch. On the right, an open arch gives access to the courtyard while, on the left, the entrance to the castle is decorated with a large door with pilasters and rustication, surmounted by a broken triangular pediment which frames an armorial stone. This door gives access to a hall or vestibule from which starts a straight staircase, followed by a landing with square balusters. Another door gives access to the turret staircase. This small spiral staircase rises in the turret on a skew squinch whose base connects to the band which encircles the adjacent round tower. The latter, of ashlar stone, is decorated with two bands and crowned by a strong cornice. The base is heavily sloped.
