Mentionné dès 1096, le lieu paraît avoir été fortifié au 12e siècle par le comte de Toulouse. Châtellenie royale du 13e au 14e siècle. Durant les guerres de Religion, le château, pris en 1577, fait l'objet d'un long siège de six mois en 1590, sous le commandement du capitaine Blondeau. Après la reddition, une garnison de dix soldats y fut entretenue aux frais du diocèse. Pour prévenir contre les inondations du Rhône, une digue fut construite contre le château en 1626. Des anciennes fortifications ne subsiste plus que la tour carrée juchée sur une étroite aiguille rocheuse. A quelques mètres vers l'est sont visibles les vestiges de la chapelle castrale romane.

History
Mentioned as early as 1096, the place appears to have been fortified in the 12th century by the count of Toulouse. Royal castellany from the 13th to the 14th century. During the Wars of Religion, the castle, taken in 1577, was the object of a long siege of six months in 1590, under the command of captain Blondeau. After the surrender, a garrison of ten soldiers was maintained there at the expense of the diocese. To prevent against the floods of the Rhône, a dike was constructed against the castle in 1626. Of the old fortifications, only the square tower perched on a narrow rocky needle remains. A few metres to the east are visible the remains of the Romanesque castle chapel.
