Historique
Ancien château des comtes de Toulouse. Au 13e siècle, il passa aux mains des évêques et prévôts d'Avignon et tomba ensuite dans le domaine royal. Le pape Clément V mourut dans l'une des chambres de ce château le 20 avril 1314. L'édifice possédait une chapelle construite par Saint-Louis sur le modèle de la Sainte-Chapelle. Cette tour faisait partie de l'édifice, flanquant le mur d'enceinte dont il ne reste que l'amorce. A l'intérieur, elle ne comporte qu'une salle semi-circulaire et un petit escalier à vis donnant accès à la terrasse qui la couvre. La salle est voûtée d'une lourde voûte d'ogives et ornée d'une clef en rosace. Les ogives retombent sur d'épais culs de lampe. Deux meutrières l'éclairent au niveau du sol.

History
Former castle of the counts of Toulouse. In the 13th century, it passed into the hands of the bishops and provosts of Avignon and subsequently fell into the royal domain. Pope Clement V died in one of the rooms of this castle on 20 April 1314. The building possessed a chapel built by Saint-Louis on the model of the Sainte-Chapelle. This tower formed part of the building, flanking the curtain wall of which only the base survives. Inside, it contains only a semi-circular room and a small spiral staircase giving access to the terrace that covers it. The room is vaulted with a heavy rib vault and ornamented with a key-stone in rosette form. The ribs rest on thick corbels. Two loopholes light it at ground level.
