Known by the name of "Fort Vauban" in tradition, the citadel may have been established on the plans of the architect. In 1686, the intendant of Languedoc decided that construction would be financed from provincial funds. In 1688, the officers' furniture was installed there. This new fort occupied the site of the comtal and baronial castles, buildings ruined during the troubles of the early 17th century. The clearing of the surroundings caused other buildings to disappear, such as the Capuchin convent. According to an 18th-century plan, the bastions bore the following names: bastion of the Roque, Camus, of the Town, of the Capuchins, royal and of the Prairie. The main entrance was not in a curtain but in the middle of a face of the royal bastion. Another entrance, or postern, opened into a curtain and was defended by a Place d'Armes. From 1789 onwards, the barracks built inside the fort received prisoners. The trace of the enclosure takes the form of an irregular pentagon. The outworks (demi-lunes...) have practically disappeared since the creation of public gardens which left only the ditches around the great bastion 6 surviving. The main entrance is situated in bastion 6 and is preceded by a two-arch bridge. Echauguettes remain at the point of bastions 3 and 6.
