History

The land of Pennautier was acquired in 1580 by Bertrand de Reich, treasurer of the Treasury of the States of Languedoc. The building was constructed in 1620 by Pierre-Louis de Reich. At the end of the 18th century, Jacques Amable Beynaguet de Pennautier made alterations to it. The present château is the result of successive transformations. In its original state in the 17th century, the building consisted of a central body oriented east-west, flanked to the north as to the south by two important pavilions. In the 18th century, two low wings were added on either side of the two southern pavilions between which came to be lodged, in the 19th century, a central body. In the 20th century, the north-east pavilion was removed. With the exception of the two 18th-century wings which have only a ground floor, the château has one principal storey and an attic storey over a ground floor. Inside, most of the rooms are on the south side and communicate directly by enfilade doors. The first floor and the attic storey are reserved for bedrooms, antechambers, library, office and study. Most are panelled and have parquet flooring.
