Historique

History
Of the "castrum" mentioned in 1259, nothing visible remains, except perhaps the bases of the square tower. In 1641, the castle possessed a tower with dovecote above, stables, lower courtyard, and moat. Plots maps from the 18th century indicate that the moats were filled in by 1616. Works were undertaken in 1658. It is probably from this building campaign that date the large windows of the buildings adjacent to the square tower. Altered later, these windows show only a few portions of frames. The great portal is probably half a century later. A vast esplanade, with agricultural sheds, precedes a courtyard whose three sides are surrounded by buildings. The square tower is located at the north-east exterior corner. The main dwelling links the square tower to a stair turret which occupies the north-west corner of the courtyard. The habitation thus occupies the north face of the courtyard, the two other faces being reserved for outbuildings. The square tower presents, at its base, fairly pronounced batter. It is possible that this base is a vestige of the primitive stronghold, but the construction of the walls in elevation does not appear to be earlier than the 16th century. The square gunholes are not earlier than the end of the 16th century. The main dwelling attached to the tower has been deeply altered several times. The north façade nevertheless preserves some window frames from the 17th century, with mullions of square section, probably corresponding to the repairs of 1658. The spiral staircase was enclosed in a polygonal turret at the north-west corner of the courtyard, and it was preserved during the reconstructions of the 17th century. The worn stone steps were removed and replaced by wood and bricks. The Flemish-style portal opens between two pilasters with channelling, surmounted by vases decorated with linens. The ironwork of the grille presents volutes framing a central cartouche with oblique pearled lattice.
