Manufactory created by Guillaume Castanier in 1694. In 1696, he obtained letters patent for its establishment as a royal manufacture. Possessors of one of the most considerable fortunes in the kingdom, the Castanier family gradually abandoned their manufactories for their lands. The disappearance of François Castanier, around 1750, marked the definitive decline of these draperies. An attempt at resumption was made in 1849. At that date, a decree of the President of the Republic authorized the joint-stock company called Compagnie de la Manufacture de la Trivalle. The cloth industry was replaced in the region by the wholesale rag trade. The buildings extend between the two bridges, on the right bank of the Aude. The front building houses the offices and the director's residence. The south facade is centred on an entrance in a forward projection, slightly offset. This north wing is extended by a small terrace. The two corners of the wall supporting this terrace are cut away into niches. The central forward projection projects slightly from the facade. It consists of an entrance portal in basket-handle arch, a window on the first and second storeys, all under a wide circular pediment. The entrance portal has four doors, under a fixed lintel with open ironwork. The south portal, narrower, is in lowered round arch with ashlar voussoirs, framed by a moulding. The keystone is carved with a mask with oblique eyes, beard and scattered hair. The grand staircase, which only serves the first storey, is located opposite the entrance door. It is a staircase with two parallel flights, interrupted by a landing with three steps. The handrail consists of long panels with symmetrical tracery composed of two opposed volutes, connected to the newels and handrail by spiralled crescents. For the large panels, the frame is doubled by an inner frame, cut with spirals and linked to the side newels by ovals with spheres. Monotony is avoided by extensive use of sheet-metal foliage. The railings of the north terrace comprise five panels linked by pilasters. The decoration consists of equal and opposed volutes. As with the staircase, the elements are spiralled crescents but arranged at equal intervals. At the pilasters, the ironwork simulates a trilobed leaf.
