Mentionné dès 978, le château appartenait aux vicomtes de Narbonne. Dans l'enceinte, une chapelle était le siège d'une rectorie du diocèse de Narbonne, rattachée pour les redevances à la baylie de Canet. Les restes de ces constructions s'élèvent sur une colline peu distante du monastère de Fontfroide. Epousant les contours du rocher naturel, les courtines crénelées, munies d'archères courtes, semblent représenter actuellement les éléments les plus anciens du château (12e siècle), la chapelle romane étant probablement contemporaine et participant à la défense par son haut mur latéral en petit appareil. Deux tours circulaires bien appareillées paraissent un peu plus tardives (fin 12e ?). Une tour d'angle polygonale présente de longues archères à étriers et ne peut être antérieure à la fin du 13e siècle.

History
Mentioned from 978, the castle belonged to the viscounts of Narbonne. Within the enclosure, a chapel was the seat of a rectory of the diocese of Narbonne, attached for dues to the bailiwick of Canet. The remains of these constructions stand on a hill not far distant from the monastery of Fontfroide. Following the contours of the natural rock, the crenellated curtains, furnished with short arrow slits, seem to represent currently the most ancient elements of the castle (12th century), the Romanesque chapel being probably contemporary and participating in the defence by its high lateral wall in small ashlar. Two well-built circular towers appear somewhat later (late 12th century?). A polygonal corner tower presents long arrow slits with stirrups and cannot be earlier than the late 13th century.
