Alaigne comptait parmi les seigneuries de l'archevêque de Narbonne. Le castrum est mentionné en 1252 et 1309, mais la construction de la porte fortifiée actuelle doit être postérieure. L'édifice adjacent à la porte servait déjà de maison presbytérale avant la Révolution et figure comme telle sur un plan du 18e siècle. La porte sud était alors dénommée porte de "Pépi" ou de "Popy". La porte profonde est surmontée d'une tour contenant trois salles superposées. La seule ouverture ancienne, au premier étage côté sud, est une embrasure verticale aux deux extrémités évasées circulairement. Le passage sous la tour est couvert d'une voûte en plein cintre. En avant de l'arc plein cintre, la première voûte présente une fente à mâchicoulis. La clef de l'arc d'entrée, au sud, est sculptée d'un blason suspendu par une courroie retordue. Plus haut dans le mur, est incrustée une grande pierre sculptée du blason en accolade de l'archevêque François Halle, le tout sculpté en relief. Cet écu est encadré par deux pinacles à crochets et surmonté d'une accolade. Au-dessus du fleuron sont sculptées, en relief, les initiales IHS en gothique. Plus haut est encastré un cadran solaire à chiffres gothiques. Le presbytère s'ouvre par une porte dont la construction est antérieure à celle de la tour. Porte en arc brisé, l'arc est composé de onze claveaux. Encadrement intérieur chanfreiné. La clef, au sommet, est sculptée en relief d'un écu suspendu par un lien retordu. Dans le mur du presbytère, à l'extérieur de la porte fortifiée, est incrustée une pierre rectangulaire sculptée en relief d'un écu. C'est le blason de François-Guillaume de Castelnau de Clermont-Lodève, archevêque de Narbonne.

History
Alaigne counted among the lordships of the Archbishop of Narbonne. The castrum is mentioned in 1252 and 1309, but the construction of the present fortified gate must be later. In the wall of the presbytery, outside the fortified gate, is embedded a rectangular stone carved in relief with a coat of arms.
