Historique

History
Pioussay depended, from the 12th century, on the seigneury of Empuré, the marquisate of Ruffec and the election of Angoulême. Its parish fell under the archdeaconry of Boin. Beside the Romanesque church stood a priory cure of the order of Saint-Augustine, a dependency of the abbey of Saint-Séverin. The church is of rectangular plan, bristling with buttresses, enlarged to the south by a chapel. The choir with flat chevet is higher than the nave, allowing a bare gable to project. The nave consists of four bays vaulted with a broken barrel vault on ribs, resting on piers with Romanesque capitals. The choir presents two bays vaulted with rib vaults whose ribs rest on piers without capitals. The south side chapel is vaulted the same way. The building opens through a Gothic portal and its chevet is pierced by a large opening with flamboyant tracery. A campanile surmounts the west elevation.
