Historique

History
Prefectural building erected between 1828 and 1833 by architect Segretain (central part in U shape). The lateral additions of 1894 are by architect Mongeaud. Forming a courtyard delimited by a railing, a central building is flanked by two wings at right angles. The decoration of this part is limited to the entrance porch under a triangular pediment, punctuated at its centre by a canopy which shelters the steps. The ground floor is marked by the Tuscan order while the Ionic order adorns the storey. The main entrance is made by three round-arch arcatures with a central keystone. Above, the rectangular openings are decorated with drip mouldings and moulded entablatures. The tympanum of the central pediment is occupied by a sculpture representing the Deux-Sèvres. The accesses of the lateral wings are framed by flat pilasters. The rear elevation overlooks the former botanical garden. An outbuilding porch supports its two storeys of columns on a terrace. A triangular pediment crowns the whole thing. The interior presents some prestigious elements in the central main dwelling, such as the entrance hall, a series of interconnected salons with remarkable decoration (plasterwork, gilded or coffered ceilings, paintings...). On the storey, the central salon was decorated in 1867 by the painter artist Lecoq.
