Historique

History
The priory of Coulon depended on the abbey of Charroux. The church depended on the diocese of Saintes. Of the first Romanesque building only a few sculptured modillions remain on the south wall. Important repairs took place in the 15th century (south aisle and its portal). Partly burned in 1569, the church was restored in the 17th century (bell tower around 1671). From the 18th century date several funeral slabs. At the Revolution, the church is converted into a barn and workshop. From 1815 to 1862 several campaigns of works will succeed each other, conducted by the architects Chavanet and then Théophile Segrétain. These works concern the refection of the semicircle of the choir, the partial reconstruction of the south wall, the remaking of the façade and the roof. From 1852 to 1862: refection of the vaults of the church and the roof structure, the piers of the nave, the north wall... The church thus restored presents itself as a vast rectangle bristling with projecting buttresses. The chevet is matched with a central semicircle. The building consists of a central nave of four bays vaulted with ribs, flanked by two lower aisles. Two Gothic doors are pierced on the façade and on the south wall. The square bell tower, with an external preaching platform, rises to the south of the façade.
